DOCTRINAL STATEMENT of CANAAN BAPTIST CHURCH

CONCERNING THE SCRIPTURES.

We believe the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments as verbally inspired of God, and are inerrant in the original writings, and that they are of supreme and final authority in faith and practice.
II Timothy 3:16, 17; II Peter 1:20, 21.

CONCERNING THE TRUE GOD.

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
I Corinthians 8:6; I John 5:7; Exodus 20:2,3.

We believe that Jesus Christ was begotten by the Holy Spirit, and born of Mary, a virgin, and is true God and true man.
Luke 1:30-35; John 1:14

We believe that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, equal with the Father and Son; and of the same essence and nature, that He convicts of sin, righteousness, and judgment, bears witness to the truth, is the agent of the New Birth, and He seals, endues, guides, teaches, witnesses to, sanctifies, and helps the believer, indwelling every true child of God.
II Corinthians 13:14; John 14:16, 17; Romans 8:14-27.

CONCERNING THE DEVIL OR SATAN.

We believe in the distinct personality of Satan, and that he is the unholy god of this age, author of all powers of darkness and sin, and is destined to eternal judgment in the lake of fire.
II Corinthians 4:4; Revelation 20:10.

CONCERNING CREATION.

We believe that God created the heavens and earth, including all life, "each after it's own kind" by direct act and not by the process of evolution.
Genesis 1:1-31; Colossians 1:16,17; John 1:3.

CONCERNING THE FALL OF MAN.

We believe that man was created in the image of God, that he sinned and thereby incurred not only physical death, but also that spiritual death which is separation from God; and that all human beings are born with a sinful nature, and in the case of those who reach the age of moral responsibility, are sinners in thought, word, and deed.
Genesis 1:27; 3:1-7; Romans 5:12; 15-21.

CONCERNING THE REDEMPTION FROM SIN.

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures as Representative and Substitutionary Sacrifice, and that all who believe in Him are justified on the ground of His shed blood.
Acts 13:38, 39; Romans 5:1-9; I Corinthians 15:1-4.

CONCERNING SALVATION BY GRACE.

We believe that all who receive by faith the Lord Jesus Christ are born again of the Holy Spirit and thereby become children of God.

We believe in the "Eternal Security" of the believer; that it is impossible for one born into the Family of God ever to be lost.
John 10:27-29; John 5:24; Acts 16:31; Ephesians 2:8,9; I Peter 1:23.

CONCERNING THE CHURCH.

We believe that a local church is a congregation of Baptized believers, associated by Covenant of faith and friendship of the Gospel; observing the rights and privileges invested in them by His Word; that it's officers are pastors and deacons whose qualifications, claims, and duties are clearly defined in the scriptures; we believe the true mission of the church is the faithful witnessing of Christ to all men as we have opportunity.

We hold that the local Church has the absolute right of self-government, free from the interference of any hierarchy of individuals or organizations; and that the one and only head is Christ. that it is scriptural for true churches to cooperate with each other in contending for the faith and for the furtherance of the Gospel; that each local Church is the sole judge of the measure and method of it's cooperation; on all matters of membership, of policy, of government, of discipline, of benevolence, the will of the local Church is final.
Acts 2:41, 42; I Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:23, 24; Acts 15:3-18.

CONCERNING ORDINANCES.

We believe that the Scriptural Ordinances of the Church are Baptism (Immersion) and the Lord's Supper; that Baptism should be administered to the believers only as a symbol of their belief in the Death, Burial, and Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and as testimony to the world of that belief and of their Death, Burial, and Resurrection with Him; and that the Lord's Supper should be partaken by Baptized believers only to show forth His Death, untill He comes.
I Corinthians. 11:23-32; Acts 8:36-39; Colossians. 2:12; Matthew. 28:19,20.

CONCERNING THE RIGHTEOUS AND THE WICKED.

We believe in the bodily resurrection of the just and the unjust., the everlasting blessedness of the saved, and the everlasting punishment of the lost. Only those who put their faith in Jesus Christ are justified and declared righteous by God.
John 5:24-29; Matthew 25:41-46.

CONCERNING THE RETURN OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST.

We believe in the "Blessed Hope" - the personal, bodily, premillennial, pretribulational, and imminent return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, when the church, his bride, will be "gathered together" unto Him.
Revelation 22:12, I Thessalonians 4:13-18; I Corinthians 15:51-53.

CONCERNING THE RESURRECTION.

We believe in the resurrection of the crucified body of our Lord, in His Ascension into Heaven, and His present life there as High Priest and Advocate.
I Timothy 2:5,6; Mark l6:6; Luke 24:36-48; Acts 1:10,11; Hebrews. 10:19-22.

CONCERNING SEPARATION.

We believe in the personal separation of believers from the conduct and practices of the world which are contrary to the Word of God; and in separation from ecclesiastical apostasy, modernism and liberalism or any such manifestation of compromise of the truths of Scripture.
Psalm 1;1 Romans 12:1,2; I John 2:15; II Corinthians 6:14-17.

CONCERNING CIVIL GOVERNMENT.

We believe that civil government is of divine appointment for the interest and good order of human society; that magistrates are to be prayed for, conscientiously honored, and obeyed; except in things opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ who is the only Lord of the conscience, and the coming Prince of the Kings of the earth.
Romans 13:17; II Samuel 23:3; Exodus 18:21,22; Acts 23:5; Matthew. 22:21; Acts 5:20; Acts 4:19,20; Daniel 3:17, 18.
